Summary
In New York City there was a new recycling facility that will cut done on the amount of trucking (the recyclables) by 260,000 miles a year. This will reach two goals set by PlaNYC, the city's long-term sustainability plan, by improving air quality and it will reduce the city’s carbon footprint. The new facility will occupy 100,000 square feet of Sunset Park's 30th Street Pier. It will get its metal, glass and plastic recyclables from Brooklyn, by truck 100 or fewer per day, and the rest from Bronx and Queens, by barge. Robert Kelman, president of commercial development for Sims Metal Management North America, said, "Between the city and our investments, we will be putting approximately $80 million into the 30th Street pier and will utilize the best available technologies from around the world, creating up to 100 new jobs that, with all of our 230 locations around the world, will be good quality jobs that will make an important contribution to the sustainability of our city." There are no objections from nearby communities; they also hope to make learning certain to teach kids about recycling. The facility is expected to open in December 2011, and to generate 100 new jobs. The city's press release adds that the facility is part of the Sunset Park Waterfront Vision Plan, which will see more than $165 million of city funds invested in developing over 3.5 million square feet of waterfront industrial space and improving pedestrian access to the waterfront with 22 acres of new open space. Truck traffic is also expected to be reduced in the region by 70,000 trips annually, and the plan overall is expected to add 11,000 jobs over 10 years.
Opinion
I think this is a great idea. I think it will encourage more people to recycle and it will cut down on carbon pollution. I personally always recycle as mush as I can. Also the fact that it will create more jobs is great. I hope it will bust the economy.
Questions
1.) Is the building really worth the investment?
2.) What is used to power the recycling facility?
3.) How well will this work to help the PlaNYC plans for New York?
4.) Where are the other 229 locations in the world?

1. I think the building is worth the investment. Although this building with help New York go more green and help the enviroment very much it will more than likely to cost much money to keep up and running smoothly.
ReplyDelete2. The recycables are what is used to power the recycling facilities. Truckers go around the city collecting these recycables such as glass, plastic, and paper to bring back to the facility and use to power it up.
3. I think this will work very well to help the PlaNYC plans for New York. I think many people will want to help the facilities and use their recycables to power the building. And New York is one of the most populated cities in the United States so it would make sense that they would receive many recycables.
4. Another location around the world where this method is being used is in Puerto Rico. This company wants to do the same thing they are trying to acomplish in New York city which is to make the place a better enviroment to live in.
I think that this is a big step towards the future of our planet. New York is spending it's money to help save the planet; it is a great thing that they are doing without having to do so. I think that if every city in the world, or even every major city in the world, took a step like this, the world would be a much less polluted place. I am very pleased with New York and their decision to help the environment.
ReplyDeleteAnswers to questions:
1.) I think that the building is very much worth the investment. It will help out the planet and be a good role model for other places all over. It will be costly (around 80 million dollars) but defiantly worth it.
2.) The things that are being recycled are the things that are powering the plant. All the recyclables are powering it: glass, aluminium, and plastic.
3.) It will very much so help the PlaNYC plans for New York. Many people will get jobs and be making money in this horrifying economy. Also people will learn from New Yorks example that they should recycle. This is benefiting the entire planet.
4.) Well there are a few on many different continents. A few in America, a few in Australia, a few in Europe and a couple in China. One specific example is the plant in Beijing. It is taking the same steps as the one here in New York to benefit the world.
Here are a few questions of my own...
1. How many exact jobs will this produce for New York?
2. How much can be recycled in a year?
3. How many of these facilities are in America?
4. When will New York's recycling plant be up and running?

Answers to Questions-Curtis Sumner
ReplyDelete1. I think that it is worth the investment, because although it may be expensive to build and to keep running, in reality we could really use one more of these buildings. And this can also be an educational thing, so we can help the future shapes of our world learn about recycling and how to keep the earth clean.
2. I would guess that electricity is what makes everything in the facility work, but the people running it are probably making the money to purchase electricity by selling the recycled metals, so it pretty much goes full circle financially.
3. It will help, but not by much in itself. As the facility helps the community over time, people will go by it's example, and raise ore money to build more. This will have an effect like a ripple in a pond, where one starts it off, and then more are built, and before you know it, you have dozens and dozens in a single region. And by that time, their carbon footprint will be gone, or at least spiraling down.
4. I would think that there would be more that are scattered across the U.S., and maybe some in Europe. And i'm probably wrong, but I don't think that there are many to be found in Africa, Asia, and South America.
Other questions to consider-
1) How much will this facility have an affect on the unemployment rate in the U.S?
2) Would other communities really be inspired to build a facility like this?
3) Could this be having a similar affect on other continents where they are found?
4) Based on the cost of building one of these facilities, will other people be discouraged to build one for their community, despite the good it will do for the environment?
1. I definitely think that the building is worth the investment. Even though it's gonna be expensive, i think that we need more of these buildings. It'll definitely be worth the money spent in the end.
ReplyDelete2. I would definitely say that for this project, it would be recyclable items and electricity that would make it run.
3. I think that after they actually build it, more people are going to want to use the same idea, therefore it's going to be a big plus for the PlaNYC for New York.
4. I would imagine that there are more around the US and there are probably some of these facilities around Europe and maybe even Africa.
