A Hand-Powered Table Saw Offers Electricity
Summary
A new hand cranked saw called the Jointmaker was found by Keith Johnston. This saw ruins only on your hand power and no gas or electricity. It will cut just as good as any other table saw too. One downfall is it costs $1,295. It is a hybrid device, a hand saw that employs custom Japanese saw blades offered in crosscut and rip grinds. The blade moves up and down via a hand-crank on the front of the machine and features an independent pitch adjustor. This combination allows for perfect crosscuts up to six inches in width and in material up to 1-3/4" thick.
Opinion
I think that this is a great idea. It is really a good tool for the “do it yourselfer”. Another thing is there is no pollutants from it. Without any fuel to power it, besides your hand, you won’t have to pay for anything extra. Also it’s not even like your downsizing you still great a great cut. I know I would get one.
Questions
1) Why does it cost so much?
2) Is the price worth it?
3) Would you get one?
4) Do you think it is a good step in renewable resources?
1) It costs so much because the parts needed to make the saw are very expensive. They are imported from china and the process of putting them together is tedious and time consuming which is why the saw costs so much.
ReplyDelete2) I think that the product is worth the price. The price shouldn't matter if you are using a saw a lot. If you use it enough to save that much electricity then the saw is deffinatly worht the price.
3) I probably wouldn't buy this saw unless i would use it all the time. It is too expensive and I barly ever use a saw.
4) I think that this developement is deffinatly a big step towards further energy saving technologies. This saw can give us the framework for other new technologies that could use the same idea, and maybe not cost as much.

I think this is a very cool idea but it doesn't convince me enough. I mean if you think about it how many times do we use a saw in a month unless you are someone who has an occupation with saws. It is very cool how it is hybrid and stuff but i really don't think anyone will buy something for that much and only pull it out of their garage maybe two times every month. But if job involves cutting down trees and carpentry then I would definetly get the saw.
ReplyDeleteQuestions
1. How much damage could a saw actually do to the environment?
2. How many times will you actually use the saw?
3. Where are they getting the energy to supply the saw?

ReplyDeleteI like the idea, but I can't shake the feeling that this has been done before. There are these things that you can use to cut wood by only using hand power. They are called hand saws. Another problem is the cost. You could probably just buy a regular electric saw for less, even with the added electricity bill. However, I can see why this sort of item would be bought. I have worked with my father with electric saws, and there are some safety risks with it. If something sudden and unexpected happens, my dad can't immediately go over and check it out, because the saw is still running. WIth the new hand powered one, however, you can start and stop immediately.
1. It costs so much because it is a complicated network of little wood and metal pieces, so it is probably really hard to make. That, and they are exclusive Japanese pieces, which can't be very cheap.
2. The price is not worth it, because it still has its limitations. Many other electric saws are probably cheaper and can cut more cleanly and straighter, or deeper. If you are looking for a good price deal, this would be a bad idea.
4. If the road to using only renewable sources is a single lightyear long, then this machine is only taking a step with the length of a millimeter. It wouldn't even be used much, and would only save enough electricity to power a lightbulb for a few minutes.
